02 The place

A citadel of the Zand era

The Karim Khan Citadel (Arg-e Karim Khan) is a monument in the centre of the city of Shiraz, dating back to the Zand dynasty. It consists of several parts, such as rooms, chambers and baths. The walls of the citadel are decorated all around with beautiful paintings and miniatures, and its crenellated walls resemble ancient Persian architecture.

The photograph shows the bath of the complex. The unique architecture, lighting and patterns of Iranian baths catch every visitor’s eye at first glance.

03 In his words

A sense of history

Seeing this place gave me a historic mood. From the moment we look at the walls and the sentry tower from outside, until we come inside to the courtyard, this mood is felt more and more, and when you arrive at the bath it reaches its height. The play of light in that dark place, and the coolness of the space, add to this mood.
